Some of the common terms used in child development and parenting research

Attachment/bonding

The bond or relationships between parent and infant

Baseline

An assessment conducted at the beginning of a project or a  programme

Consent

Informed consent is a voluntary agreement to participate in research

Evaluation

An assessment of the impact of an intervention

Evidence-based

Use of the best available research and practice knowledge to inform decision-making

Implementation

The use of strategies to introduce or change evidence-based health interventions within specific setting

Infant mental health

How well a child develops socially and emotionally from birth to 3 years

Intervention

An action intended to modify an outcome

Knowledge translation

The process of disseminating and/or implementing knowledge

Longitudinal

research design that involves repeated observations of the same variables over short or long periods of time

Mental health

A person’s psychological wellbeing

Sensitive parent

A parent’s ability to tune in to their infant’s cues and signals and responds appropriately and consistently to them

Wellbeing

A combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health

Wraparound

Individualised, coordinated, family-driven care to meet complex needs of children and families
